Awakening
Reflections on Spring, Rest, and Hope
Living along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, spring arrives gently, often unpredictably. As the ice thins and gradually breaks apart, the river, too, awakens from its winter slumber. Occasional bursts of snow, surprising yet fleeting, remind us that the path to warmth and renewal isn't always straightforward, yet spring asserts itself, nonetheless. The earth slowly stretches awake, shaking off the heaviness of winter.
Awakening, my theme for this month, means becoming conscious or aware of something new, rising to greater awareness, clarity, and engagement with life. This can be both literal—like the awakening earth in spring—and figurative, representing personal growth, emotional shifts, or spiritual enlightenment. As a therapist, I've observed this awakening process in clients who grapple with seasonal affective disorder during winter’s shorter, darker days. With the return of sunlight and warmth, they often find themselves relying less on coping tools that supported them through winter, spending more time outdoors, and reconnecting with a sense of hope and renewal. How do you experience awakening? Do you think of it relative to sleep?
Rest: A Vital Component of Awakening
Rest is an essential but frequently overlooked aspect of our personal awakening. True rest is multifaceted and includes emotional, mental, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual dimensions, in addition to physical sleep. Engaging intentionally with rest can profoundly enhance our well-being, helping us recharge, process experiences, and gain clarity. It serves as a foundation for growth and healing, enabling us to approach life with renewed energy, clarity, and authenticity.
When we give ourselves permission to rest, we acknowledge our intrinsic worth beyond productivity and busyness. Prioritizing rest can lead to greater emotional resilience, clearer thinking, enhanced creativity, and improved overall health. Just as nature demonstrates resilience and adaptability through cycles of rest and awakening, embracing intentional rest deeply enriches our capacity to thrive.
