Recovering the Self
Embracing the End of Summer
Why no August issue? Radical self-care. Decision fatigue. Moving ahead with my life in a new home on my own after twenty-five years in a complicated relationship. Accepting the gift of a wonderful adventure from a friend of three years that I’d never met. I felt it all. I accepted help. I created a home. I made friends with this sweet rabbit that I’ve named Billy. I am happy. I am grateful.
I am leading a book club this month at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center on Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hahn. He speaks of recovering the self. That is the work before me. I invite you to join me as the seasons change and we say goodbye to summer.
Thank you for your patience. Off we go!
Embracing the Bittersweet Farewell: The End of Summer
As the days grow shorter, the air turns crisper, and the leaves begin their gradual transformation into a mosaic of vibrant hues, we find ourselves at the bittersweet juncture where summer ends. It's a time when long, lazy days at the beach, barbecues under the sun, and the freedom of unstructured hours come to an end. While the end of summer may carry a touch of melancholy, it also offers a unique opportunity for reflection and anticipation. Let's explore the multifaceted nature of this season's farewell and the beauty it brings.
Summer Memories
I cannot help but get caught up in a bit of nostalgia as we bid farewell to the sun-soaked days and balmy evenings. Summer holds a treasure trove of memories, with traditions and hurts spanning generations. Did we enjoy the family reunion? Do we want to return to the same vacation spot we’ve visited for years? What changes do we want to make in how we spend summer days that fly by so quickly? As we embrace the end of summer, we carry all it of forward, the good, the bad, and everything in between.
A Time for Reflection
The end of summer invites us to reflect on the passing of time and the transient nature of life. It reminds us of the importance of cherishing each moment and making the most of the seasons as they come and go. As we pack away our beach towels and sunhats, we are reminded to savor the simple pleasures of life, whether it's a quiet evening with a good book or a brisk walk in the crisp, autumn air.
Embracing Change
Summer's end is also a symbol of change and renewal. Just as the leaves must fall to make way for new growth in the spring, the end of summer signifies a fresh start. It's a time to set new goals, embark on new adventures, and welcome the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Change, though often daunting, is a natural and essential part of life's cycle.
Conclusion
The end of summer is a poignant reminder that all good things must come to an end.
It can also be a celebration of the rich tapestry of experiences that make up our lives.
As we embrace the changing seasons, I invite you to consider the lessons of impermanence with us. With each passing season, we have the chance to grow, evolve, and find beauty in every stage of life's journey. So, as we say goodbye to summer, let us do so with gratitude for the memories made and excitement for the adventures that lie ahead.
